SPORTSMANSHIP LEADERSHIP: A special program for student athletes and leaders of athletic teams

Athletes are looked up to by other students. When we teach this select group of young people to make good choices, we can influence an entire community of peers. There is more and more publicity about disrespectful athletic conduct by students and professionals. Most conferences for student athletes feature a sports celebrity who lectures young people about doing the right thing. How can this produce real change when students aren’t taught specific communication, team-building, persuasion/peer influencing, leadership, and other skills with which they can implement a desire to make a difference? This presentation was tailored to address the needs of athletes and coaches. It uses creative and original activities to identify what sportsmanship really is, how to make challenging choices about respect and integrity, and most importantly how to influence, lead, and persuade others in a positive way.
